INTERVIEW SERIES: A CONVERSATION WITH ANITA BITTON - REIMAGINING THE FUTURE

Anita Bitton is the founder and CEO of Establishment New York, a creative talent agency in Manhattan. She is currently the casting director for major fashion brands such as Miu Miu, Bottega Veneta, and Marc Jacobs. In the world of photography, she worked with the industry's legends like Irving Penn, Tim Walker, and the late Peter Lindbergh. She also introduced to the industry models that I think departed from the traditionally defined and accepted norms of "beauty". No wonder Business of Fashion labelled her "A-list casting director".

I thank Anita Bitton tremendously for sharing her honest thoughts and perceptive opinions. It was a huge honor to have her as my guest. I hope you all enjoy this interview. Also, feel free to visit the official website to appreciate all the great works she has done over the years!

Hongjun Byun (HB): How are you holding up in this difficult time?

Anita Bitton (AB): We are weathering the storm. I live in Manhattan, and it has been a great adjustment. But the spirit of the city is strong. We're following the rules, and preparing for the new normal.

HB: Can you explain to us what your job is at Establishment New York? 

AB: Casting has become a word that gets thrown around a lot when people are trying to understand and identify the role we play in the world of designers, photographers, magazines, etc. We are working to put together a vision and a face that best represents a brand, designer, etc. I started Establishment New York as a response to a growing demand for photography, faces, an understanding of the consumer reactions to trends and the emerging sub-cultures. As this job has evolved, we find ourselves functioning in larger companies in an advisory role: assisting them in identifying the face of the brand and helping them develop their narrative. We'll identify their needs and execute the deliveries, assisting said companies' divisions, in all areas and on all platforms. For smaller companies, we are working from the inside out. We're helping them define, develop, and identify who, what, when, and where, thereby building and painting the company DNA along the away.

HB: With fashion shows cancelled and photoshoots postponed for the foreseeable future, how do you see your job affected? How would the model search would look like with global travels in freeze?

AB: We are already privy to some exciting developments in technology, protocol and execution methods. This is going to be an incredible time of development and growth. It's a time to reassess how we can work more harmoniously with the environment, to come up with more sustainable work practices, and to invest more energy in the talent and the process of the things we do. We will have space to reflect our work and ensure that each task is given meaningful consideration. Where there will be losses, there will be immense gains. Given the nature of social media, we are living in a state of worldwide access. Scouting has been all access for a number of years now. I think what will happen is to look at how to do this in a more sustainable manner. We have to look at the carbon footprint and do better. Be better, and work out more efficient ways of getting to the same epic standards and production. The current situation will give time for pause, and we we will be back with more efficient work practices.

HB: What are some challenges, both business- and legal-wise, do you want to see addressed in the casting industry or, extendedly, the fashion industry?

AB: Business-wise, I think the challenges for the fashion business will be in how to move forward. Working out ways to re-establish how it organizes and communicates with its audience. This will be a time of great engagement and growth with a strong focus on how to work more efficiently, productively, and consciously. Legally, given the nature of what we are all going through, nothing will be truly free of liability until there is a vaccine for COVID-19. Without that, there will always be a gray area for business and how this said business is conducted. What the fashion industry is doing now is working out how to react to this new way of working.

HB: You mentioned a lot about efficient work practices. Can you share some examples of those efficiencies you had in mind?

AB: We will give greater consideration to time. Working out more efficient work flow charts. Offering more robust digital presentations, which will reduce in-person interactions while ensuring all professional needs are met.

HB: In terms of diversity, I think your amazing contribution lies in the fact that you introduced models that were not traditionally considered "model-worthy" at the time. What does diversity mean to you?

AB: Diversity is the world. Diversity should never be reduced to a topic of discussion. The minute it's a discussion, we start limiting the potential for what we are able to do. We only have to look beyond our noses to understand who we are talking to. This is an area that brings so much discussion, and very little action. My policy is always to reflect and communicate this clearly in the work we do. I will always encourage everyone to think bigger and further than the eye can see.

HB: How did you start your career as a casting director?

AB: The job found me. I started in the fashion business in London in the 80s. I've had many reincarnations of the role I have played, but I grew up in the business. I've been blessed with a series of Fashion Fairies that led me on this magnificent journey.

HB: Any career advice for those who want to pursue the casting director career? Any life advice is also welcomed.

AB: Be consistent, impeccable, reliable, and courageous. Reach out and ask for what you want. Take every opportunity, and learn form it. Know that rejection is more frequent that acceptance, and know that it's none of your business what other people think of you. Always ask for help.

HB: Last question! What would be your one piece of advice for those who are aspiring to be models?

AB: Being successful in any business requires educating yourself, staying on top of current events, always reading a great book, and working on your emotional maturity. 75% of work in entertainment involves rejection. You have to work on being beyond that.

A: 캐스팅 디렉터들이 디자이너사진작가잡지의 세계에서 수행하는 역할들을 이해하고 규정짓기 위해 편의상 캐스팅이라는 용어를 많이들 사용합니다우리는 브랜드디자이너 등을 가장  대표할  있는 얼굴과 비전을 만들어내는 일을 합니다. Establishment NY 포토그래피새로운 트렌드에 대한 소비자 반응  부상하고 있는 서브컬처의 이해에 대한 수요가 증가함에 따라 제가 설립한 회사입니다회사가 발전하면서 규모가  기업들에서 고문 역할을 하기 시작했어요브랜드의 대표 얼굴을 선별하고 브랜드만의 내러티브를 발전시키는 일들에 도움을 주고 있습니다브랜드의 필요를 찾아내 그에 맞추어 결과물을 실행하고모든 분야와 모든 플랫폼에서브랜드  부서들과 작업을 합니다규모가 작은 회사의 경우모든 부분에 걸쳐 전방위적인 작업을 진행합니다그들이 who(누가), what(무엇을), when(언제), where(어디서) 정의 내리고  요소들을 발전시킬  있도록 회사의 DNA 완성해나가는 일련의 과정에 함께 합니다.

Q: 
한동안 런웨이 쇼가 취소되고 잡지 촬영들이 연기되는 상황이 지속될 텐데요캐스팅 업계는 어떤 영향을 받고 있나요전세계적으로 자유로운 여행이 힘들어진 상황에서 모델 발굴은 앞으로 어떻게 진행될까요
A: 우리는 이미 진보한 테크놀로지들에 대해 속속들이 알고 있습니다 상황은 발전과 성장을   있는 믿기 힘들 정도로 엄청난 시기가  것입니다어떻게 하면 조금  친환경적으로 일할  있는지 재평가하고지속 가능한 업무 방식들을 고안해내고 새로운 탤런트 발굴에  많은 에너지를 투자해야 합니다지금까지 저희가 일해오던 방식들을 되돌아 보기에 좋은 시간이에요잃는 것들도 분명있겠지만잃는 만큼   것들을 얻을  있을 것이라고 확신합니다지난 날들을 되돌아 볼 수 있는 여유가 생겼습니다우리에게 맡겨진 프로젝트들을 더 의미 있게 고려하고 진행해야 할 것입니다소셜 미디어 덕분에 우리는 전세계적인 접근성을 누리고 있습니다모델 스카우팅도 지난 몇 년간 그렇게 변화해왔습니다우리는 이제 지속 가능성을 집중적으로 들여다봐야 합니다우리가 하는 일들의 탄소 발자국(carbon footprint)을 줄여나가야 합니다하지만 동시에 우리가 지금 제시하는 아주 훌륭한 기준들과 결과물들의 퀄리티를 타협하지 않으며 더욱더 효율적으로 일해야겠죠현 상황은 우리에게 휴식기를 주었습니다그리고 이 상황이 마무리되어갈 때 쯤 우리는 더 효율적인 업무 방식을 갖추어 돌아올 것입니다.

Q: 캐스팅 디렉터로서 직면한 사업적인 혹은 법적인 어려움들이 있으셨나요 어떤 부분을 법이 조금  다루어주었으면 좋겠다고 생각하시나요?
A: 사업적인 측면에서 이야기해보자면패션계가 직면한 과제는 "앞으로 어떻게 나아가야 할 것인가"라는 질문에 대한 답을 찾아내는 것입니다청중들과 소통하는 방식을 재확립해야 하는 시기입니다성장을 위한 훌륭한 시기가 될 거에요효율적으로생산적으로 그리고 의식적으로 일할 수 있는 방법에 대해 진지하게 고민해야 할 것입니다법적인 측면에서는우리 모두가 겪고 있는 현상황의 특수성을 고려하면백신이 개발되기 전까지는 어떤 상황이 터졌을 때 그 누구도 법적 책임으로부터 완전히 자유로울 수 없습니다앞으로 당분간 패션계에는 항상 회색 지대가 존재하겠죠현재 우리에게 닥친 새로운 업무 방식에 어떤 식으로 대응해야 할지 패션계 모두가 해답을 찾아가는 중입니다.

Q: 효율성에 대해서 여러 차례 언급하셨는데요구체적으로 어떤 의미인지 설명해 주실  있나요?
A: 효율적인 시간 사용에 훨씬  중점을  계획입니다지금보다 효율적인 작업 일정표를 고안해내야 해요클라이언트의 전문적인 요구사항들을 지금처럼 완벽하게 충족시키는 선에서 탄탄한 디지털 프레젠테이션 방식을 제공하여 대체가능한 대면 업무를 줄여나갈 계획입니다.

Q: 
다양성이란 무엇인가요개인적으로 기존에 업계가 생각하는 "전통적인 아름다움"과는 다른 결의 모델들을 업계에 등장시키는데 기여를 했다고 생각합니다.
A: 다양성이란 우리가 사는 세상  자체입니다다양성을 대화의 주제 정도로 축소시켜선 절대  됩니다그렇게 되는 순간우리 스스로 우리가 이루어   있는 것들의 잠재가능성을 제한하는 셈입니다우리가 일상에서 대화를 나누는 상대방을 이해하기 위해서는 상대방 너머에 놓인 것들까지 보고 이해할  있어야 합니다패션계에서 다양성에 대한 논의는 많았지만 실질적인 변화가 가장 적은 분야기도 합니다개인적으로는 회사 정책적으로 우리가 하는 일에 다양성을 최대한 반영하고  점을 명백하게 의사소통하려고 노력합니다항상 크게 생각하고 눈앞에 보이는  이상을 보아야 합니다.

Q: 캐스팅 디렉터는 어떻게 시작하게 되셨죠?
A:  직업이 저를 찾았습니다운명이죠. 80년대에 런던의 패션 비즈니스 업계에서  시작을 했습니다 당시만 해도 제가 수행한 역할은 다양한 이름으로 불렸죠하지만 패션 업계와 함께 성장해왔습니다 너무나도 멋진 여정에 동행해  "패션의 요정들" 있어서 저는 정말 복받은  같네요.

Q: 캐스팅 디렉터를 꿈꾸는 분들에게 커리어 조언을 주실  있나요
A: 일관성을 지니고흠잡을  없는 결과물을 위해 노력하고신뢰할  있을 만한 사람이 되어야 하며동시에 용감하게 행동해야 합니다필요한  있다면 도움을   있는 사람에게 도움을 요청할 줄도 알아야 합니다모든 기회를 받아들이고  기회를 통해 배워야 합니다합격보다 거절이  많다는 것을 명심해야 하고남들이 당신을 어떻게 생각하는지에 대해 너무 신경 쓰지 말아야 합니다항상 도움을 청하세요!

Q: 마지막으로 모델을 꿈꾸는 분들에게 조언  마디 해주실  있나요
A: 모든 업계에 해당하는 사항이지만 성공하려면 스스로를 끊임없이 교육해야 합니다현재 이슈가 되고 있는 시사 문제들에 대해 공부하고좋은 책들을 읽고정서적 성숙을 가꾸어 나가야합니다 업계 일의 75% 거절을 당하는 일이에요그것을 뛰어넘기 위해 노력해야 하죠.
