Editor's Letter: The September Issue
We have collectively adapted to what was once unimaginable months ago. It is already September, a month that generates excitement in the world of fashion. Magazines around the world release September issues to celebrate the start of a new season. Big four fashion capitals gear up for fashion weeks to have designers showcase their latest creative works. However, with the ongoing pandemic, the industry is experimenting with the ways in which it communicates fashion to the audience. For example, New York Fashion Week, for the most part, will operate on virtual platforms while Paris Fashion Week will adhere to the traditional runway format. At this point, no one can predict with certainty what these diverging paths will lead us to. All I can say is that creative talents strive to bring the best out of the sartorial in these uncertain times.
I was in Seoul last month to treat myself a well-earned respite. I needed some time around my family and friends to regain the energy that's necessary to move forward. I was especially happy for my friend who just started his career as a musician. I was fortunate enough to attend his concert, and it's always heart-warming to see your loved ones blossoming along the journey. I came back to Manhattan after having nourished both physically and mentally.
Yesterday, I started my first week of classes. Yes, it's my final year at law school. I'm taking Fashion Modeling Law and Trademark Law to deepen my understanding in fashion and intellectual property. The thought of graduation, at least for now, does not necessarily have a liberating feel to it. Am I well prepared to perform the job of aiding designers and artists in protecting their creative works? As I dig deeper, my confidence hollows out. Luckily, this blog offers me an enormous source of reassurance. If I succeed in explaining legal/business issues without legalese and industry jargons, this blog would precisely accomplish what it was set out to achieve. As my first September Issue, I will be rolling out various interviews and posts that highlight the exigencies of the day, particularly paying attention to societal and cultural undercurrents. So stay tuned and welcome back!
