Editor's Letter: October 2020
It's October. Well, mid-October, to be precise. Normally, the month would be the perfect occasion to enjoy everything the autumn has to offer. However, this is not a normal time. I'm not talking about COVID-19, though it continues to disrupt our lives in various ways. The presidential election is coming up, and this election will shape the future of this nation. Moreover, with the passing of Justice Ginsburg, the stakes couldn't be higher. Although I cannot vote as a non-citizen, I urge my fellow Americans to cast their ballots so that we can imagine, once gain, a better future for us and generations to come.
Justice Ginsburg is celebrated as a champion, perhaps the champion, of gender equality, which, in itself is a colossal feat. Less noticed is her contribution to the world of intellectual property. While on the bench, she tirelessly defended and espoused the rights of creators - the Lockean idea that a person is entitled to the fruits of his or her labor. She rightly recognized that protecting IP rights is, on a higher level, tantamount to securing individual liberty because IP rights are, after all, property rights. So this month, I will dedicate some posts to understanding some of the notable IP opinions she penned to give credit where it's due. I believe that's a way I can, as a law student and a budding lawyer, carry forward a legacy she has bequeathed to us.
This month is especially special for me because, yesterday, I celebrated my last birthday of my twenties. Over the years, I had ups and downs, but I'm certain that I have become a better version of myself. Hey, and that's what life is supposed to be about: keep growing while finding some meaning in one's life! Having said that, running this fashion law blog has been such a rewarding experience. If I become an IP lawyer in the fashion industry in the near future, I will unhesitatingly look back to this moment to tell myself that I made the right choice. So, again, thanks for being part of this amazing journey!
